The development and progress of China’s stainless steel industry is relatively late. From the founding of the people’s Republic of China to the reform and opening up, the demand for stainless steel in China is mainly based on the cutting-edge use of industry and national defense. After the reform and opening up, the rapid development of the national economy and the significant improvement of people’s living standards have stimulated the demand for stainless steel. In the 21st century, China’s stainless steel industry has witnessed rapid growth. In 2019, China’s stainless steel output reached 29.4 million tons, an increase of 10.1% compared with 26.706 million tons in 2018. China’s stainless steel output accounted for 56.30% of the world. Today, let’s take a look at the development timeline of stainless steel in China.

In 1952, Fushun Special Steel and TISCO produced stainless steel, ending the history that China could not produce stainless steel.

In december1970, TISCO produced cold rolled stainless steel sheets.

In September, 1983, the first domestic 18 ton argon oxygen external refining furnace (AOD) produced the first ultra-low carbon stainless steel in TISCO.

In december1985, the first domestic 1280mm vertical stainless steel slab caster produced China’s first stainless steel slab at TISCO.

In October, 1986, the first bright annealing line for cold rolled wide-band stainless steel in China was put into operation in the No. 7 rolling plant of TISCO.

In 1992, TISCO’s stainless steel clad plate production line, stainless steel small product production line and wide width stainless steel cold rolled plate production line were successively put into production.

In August, 1994, the 1594mm hot continuous rolling project and the 1000 ton fast forging mill of TISCO were completed and put into operation.

At the end of 1995, Shanghai No. 10 iron and steel works and Allegheny of the United States Ludem company established Shanghai Shida, the first joint venture stainless steel precision belt manufacturer in China. The first phase of the project was laid the foundation in 1997 and put into operation in 1999.

At the beginning of 1997, the State Planning Commission, the economic and Trade Commission and the Ministry of metallurgy jointly set up a stainless steel research group to conduct market research, and formulated China’s “Ninth Five Year Plan” for stainless steel development and the long-term plan for 2010, encouraging state-owned enterprises to develop stainless steel, and establishing the development layout of “Nanbao, Beitai”.

In 1997, the new 20 high Sendzimir cold rolling mill introduced by TISCO from France was put into operation.

In 1997, Zhangjiagang POSCO Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. (ZPSs), which is controlled by POSCO steel, was established, and the first phase of cold rolling project started in April.

In 1998, Baosteel and Germany Krupp jointly established Shanghai Krupp company (sks), a stainless steel cold rolled sheet enterprise.

In february1998, the stainless steel branch of China special steel enterprise association was established.

In January, 2001, the foundation of Baosteel’s stainless steel project was laid, and the first pile was laid in June.

In 2002, the transformation of the 500000 ton stainless steel production system of TISCO was completed, with an annual stainless steel production capacity of 1million tons. The first converter stainless steel in China was produced by three-step process.

In december2002, the foundation of Lianzhong (Guangzhou) Stainless Steel Co., Ltd., which was solely established by Taiwan Yilian in december2001, was laid. The cold rolling plant, hot rolling plant and steel-making plant were put into operation in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

In 2002, China’s apparent consumption of stainless steel surpassed that of the United States and ranked first in the world.

In September2004, the new 1.5 million ton stainless steel project of TISCO was started and completed in september2006, with a production capacity of 3million tons.

In june2005, Baosteel’s stainless steel expansion project was completed, with a stainless steel production capacity of 1.5 million tons.

In 2005, the expansion and transformation project of stainless steel cold rolled sheet of TISCO was completed, forming an annual capacity of 900000 tons of cold rolled sheet.

In 2006, the phase I 200000 ton slab production line of Southwest stainless steel company was put into operation.

In july2006, the hot rolling and steelmaking project with an annual output of 600000 tons of ZPSs was put into operation, becoming a comprehensive stainless steel manufacturer.

In 2006, China’s stainless steel output surpassed that of Japan and ranked first in the world.

In August, 2007, Baosteel stainless steel cold rolling production line was completed and put into operation.

In november2007, the cold rolled stainless steel project of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. was officially put into operation, becoming a comprehensive stainless steel production enterprise.

In March2008, qingtuo group settled in Fujian Fu’an.

In may2009, Beihai Chengde was established.

In August, 2009, the steelmaking production line of Dongfang special steel was officially put into operation.

In August, 2010, Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry Co., Ltd. was established.

In november2013, CICC metal was established.

In October, 2014, Angang Steel restructured Lianzhong (Guangzhou) Stainless Steel Co., Ltd.

In january2018, Liugang acquired and controlled CICC metal.

In january2018, the world’s widest 2550mm hot continuous rolling project invested and constructed by Jiangsu Delong nickel industry officially started construction.

In march2018, China’s first short process rod and wire rod production line was completed and put into operation at Yongxing special steel.

In june2018, Indonesia Qingshan phase III 1million ton stainless steel steelmaking project was put into operation.

In June, 2018, Chengde completed the world’s first 1450mm wide six stand tandem cold rolling production line.

In March, 2019, the core components of China’s first fourth generation sodium cooled fast reactor were made of high-purity stainless steel “made by TISCO”.

In july2019, Qingshan India phase I stainless steel drapel unit was put into operation.

In september2019, the world’s first stainless steel futures was listed and traded in the last stock exchange.

In September, 2019, sp2215 austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel was selected into the national advanced iron and steel materials catalogue.

In november2019, Zhongguancun stainless steel and special alloy new material industry technology innovation alliance was established in Beijing.

In January, 2020, Sichuan Gangchen Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. was opened on January 2. Its predecessor was southwest stainless steel.

In August, 2020, TISCO group and China Baowu jointly restructured. On December 23, TISCO group completed the industrial and commercial change registration of 51% equity, and the controlling shareholder was changed to China Baowu.

In november2020, Delong nickel restructured Jiangsu SHENTE.

In December, 2020, Fujian Yongjin signed a formal agreement to acquire 100% equity of qingtuo Shangke.

In December, 2020, the “signing ceremony of the agreement between Taigang group trusteeship Baosteel Desheng and Ningbo Baoxin” was held in Baowu building.
